FREDONIA, N.Y. - Six different players scored goals as the Cortland men's ice hockey team defeated Fredonia St., 7-5, in the SUNYAC opener for both schools Friday night. The Red Dragons' first four goals of the night came on the power play as they built an early 4-1 lead. Cortland improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Blue Devils fell to 2-1 and 0-1.

Senior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) led the Red Dragon offense with two goals and two assists. Junior Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and sophomore Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) each contributed a goal and three assists, senior Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core) had a goal and an assist and freshman Chris Kaleta (Angola/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal late in the second period. Sophomore goalie Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) made 44 saves to post the win.

Jordan Oye scored twice for the Blue Devils, Mitch Kulikoski collected three assists and Mat Hehr added two assists. Pat Street started in goal and made 21 saves before giving way to Kody Van Rentergem, who stopped 18 shots over the final 32 minutes, four seconds.

Cortland jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period on the strength of power-play goals from Saville, Palmisano and Heinz. Gold assisted on two of the scores. Gold made it a 4-1 game at 7:21 of the second period with the man advantage, and sophomore Ryan Durocher (Canton/Boston Bulldogs) netted his first of the season just 35 seconds later to give Cortland a 5-1 lead.

James Muscatello answered on the power play for Fredonia St. at 16:00, but Kaleta closed the period with a goal at 18:57 to make it a 6-2 game. Palmisano pushed Cortland's lead to 7-2 just 19 seconds into the third period, before the Blue Devils finished the game out with three even-strength goals.
