Evans Breaks 35-Year-Old Pool Record as Cortland Defeats Bengals, 141-98

Jeff Moessinger won the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle races
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior Dan Evans (Hamburg) broke a 35-year-old Kissinger Pool record in the 50-yard freestyle and senior Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois) won two individual events as Cortland opened its dual-meet season with a 141-98 victory at Buffalo State.

Evans won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.64 seconds, breaking the pool mark established in 1974. Moessinger took top honors in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.47) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.60).

Cortland opened with a victory by junior Luis Welch (Avon), sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence), Moessinger and Evans in the 400-yard medley relay (3:44.15). Senior Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:34.64) and sophomore Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) captured the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.68).

Sophomore Travis Burke (Massapequa) was the three-meter diving winner with a score of 204.95 points. Cortland also finished the meet with a win by freshman Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/home schooled), junior Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), sophomore Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and VanSickle in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:25.83).

Cortland will compete in a dual meet at Le Moyne College Saturday at 1 p.m.
