BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior
Carly Williams' (Emerson, NJ) goal with 16 seconds left in the first half was all the offense the SUNY Cortland women's soccer team needed as it edged SUNY Brockport, 1-0, in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals. With the victory, the Red Dragons improve to 12-4-2 and advance to the conference semifinals for the sixth straight season. The Golden Eagles fall to 10-4-3.
Williams' goal, her fourth of the season, came after she took control of a loose ball at the top of the box, and beat Brockport goalie Erin Asquith with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal. The Golden Eagles finished the half with a 5-4 advantage in shots, but few strong scoring chances.
Brockport doubled their shots in the second half, outshooting Cortland 10-7, but were still unable to find the equalizer. The Golden Eagles nearly tied the game with 18 seconds remaining, but their direct kick sailed high and wide right of the net.
Junior goalie
Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made eight saves to record her seventh shutout of the season for the sixth-seeded Red Dragons. Asquith made five saves for third-seeded Brockport. The contest marked the fourth straight year that Cortland and the Golden Eagles have met in the postseason.
The Red Dragons advance to take on second-seeded Fredonia at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, at SUNY Oneonta.
