CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally second-ranked Oswego men's hockey team scored four straight goals in the second and third periods to defeat Cortland, 5-1, in SUNYAC action Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference with the setback, while the Lakers improved to 6-1 and 5-0.

Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core) and
Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) picked up assists. Junior goalie
Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) registered 28 saves.
Junior Stephen Mallaro (Syracuse/Nepean Raiders) scored a pair of power-play goals for Oswego. Junior Justin Fox (Whitby, ON/Salem State) recorded a goal and two assists, junior Chris Laganiere (Owego/Pembroke Lumberkings) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Eric Selleck (Spencerville, ON/Pembroke Lumberkings) collected three assists. Senior Neil Musselwhite (Burlington, ON/Hamilton Red Wings) scored a goal and senior goalie Kyle Gunn-Taylor (West Seneca/Buffalo St.) stopped 16 shots.
Laganiere gave Oswego a 1-0 lead on the power play two minutes, 59 seconds into the game when he put a loose puck past Jewell right in front. Saville tied the game less than two minutes later, also on the power play, as he knocked a rebound past Gunn-Taylor just nine seconds into the man advantage.
The Lakers took control of the game in the second period with three straight goals. Mallaro scored his first of the night with a wrist shot through traffic on the power play at 4:15. Seventy-five seconds later, Musselwhite converted a short-handed breakaway for a 3-1 Laker lead. At 12:05 of the second, Oswego was awarded a penalty shot but Jewell was able to make a save. Fox, however, made it a 4-1 game when he deked Jewell and scored on the backhand at 19:13. Mallaro finished the scoring with the man advantage on a slap shot from the point at 14:30 of the third period.
Oswego out shot Cortland, 33-17, in the game. The Lakers went 3-for-6 on the power play, while the Red Dragons were successful on 1-of-7 attempts.
