Red Dragons Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals with 4-2 Win vs. Christopher Newport

Junior Brenda Semit scored the game-winning goal late in the second half
SALISBURY, MD. – Senior Christine McCabe (Greene) scored two goals and assisted on another as the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated 11th-ranked Christopher Newport, 4-2, in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in the first-ever matchup between the two schools. The Red Dragons (19-0) advance to face second-ranked Salisbury (17-1), a 4-0 winner over the College of Wooster on Saturday, in a national quarterfinal game on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a spot in the "final four" on the line. Cortland defeated Salisbury, 4-3 in overtime, in a second round game last season at Ursinus College after scoring the game's final four goals.

Junior Brenda Semit (Holland Patent) and freshman Liz DeWaters (Lockport/Royalton-Hartland) each added a goal for the Red Dragons, and sophomore Danielle Hand (Whitney Point) collected an assist on what proved to be the game-winning goal. Junior goalie Ashley Hughes (Selden/Comsewogue) made four saves in earning her 19th win of the season.

Paige Childers and Taylor Harrell each scored a goal for the Captains (16-4). Katelyn Yandle chipped in with an assist and goalie Emma Stout stopped one shot.

McCabe gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. Childers tied the game at the 16:20 mark when she knocked a rebound off Hughes' pads and into the right corner of the cage.

Harrell gave the Captains their only lead of the game 3:15 into the second half off Yandle's assist. The lead was short-lived as McCabe tied the score at 2-2 less than three and a half minutes later on a penalty stroke. Hand then set up Semit's game winner at 58:49, and DeWaters capped off the scoring with an insurance goal with 3:51 to play on a shot to the lower right. Cortland has now rallied from behind to win eight times this fall.
