NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Cortland women's volleyball team advanced to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament semifinals with a 3-0 victory over Geneseo in a match held at SUNY New Paltz. The Red Dragons (24-11) won 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 and will face Fredonia on Friday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday's 2 p.m. championship match.
Brockport beat Oneonta, 3-0, in Thursday's other quarterfinal match and will play New Paltz Friday at 3 p.m. Both New Paltz, the Eastern Division champion, and Fredonia, the Western Division champion, received byes into the semifinals of the six-team tournament.
Senior
Michelle Gaufman (Wantagh/MacArthur) led Cortland with 16 kills and 17 digs against the Knights (20-17). Freshman
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) dished out 39 assists over the three sets and added nine digs and two aces.
Sophomore
Sheena Asibey (Brentwood) added 10 kills and three blocks and senior
Ariel Rakita (Lake Grove/Sachem) finished with nine kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Cooper (Rochester/Webster Schroeder) chipped in with six kills and freshman
Katie Wick (Cortland/Homer) recorded six digs and three aces.
