Cortland Wins at Oneonta, 130-109

Matt Young won the 50-yard freestyle and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Six Red Dragons posted individual victories as Cortland defeated host Oneonta, 130-109, in a dual meet. Cortland improved its dual record to 3-2 with the victory.

Freshman Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), senior Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman), junior James McCabe (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) and freshman Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) won the 200-yard freestyle with their winning time of 1:31.36.

VanSickle won the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.18) and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.08). Senior Matt Young (Schoharie) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.71) and was second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.41), and freshman Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:47.26).

Sophomore Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) captured the 100-yard butterfly (55.78) and sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.63). Freshman Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) finished first in one diving event and second in the other, both on the one-meter board.

Sophomore Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) posted runner-up finishes in the 400-yard individual medley (4:42.71) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.70). Maximowicz finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.09), Blaszak was second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.06), senior Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.70) and freshman Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.18).

Cortland also posted second-place finishes in both relays. The combination of freshman Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/home schooled), Moessinger, freshman Dan Carr (Stillwater, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) and Nelson completed Cortland's 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.93. The 200-yard medley relay team of Young, freshman Sean Iles (Theresa/Indian River), Scheemaker and Strickland finished in 1:44.19, losing by less than three-tenths of a second.
