Ellis NCAA Triple Jump Qualifier, Five Red Dragons Win Events at St. Lawrence

Darnell Owens won the 55-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 6.59 seconds
CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman Dash Ellis (Tomkins Cove/North Rockland) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championships in the triple jump and was one of five Cortland individual winners at the non-team scoring St. Lawrence Holiday Relays.

Ellis recorded a distance of 14.14 meters (46' 4.75”) to win the triple jump. Junior Gino Bisceglia (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) won the 400 meters with an ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying time of 50.21 seconds and senior Darnell Owens (Fallsburg) also qualified for ECACs with his winning effort of 6.59 seconds in the 55-meter dash.

Senior Schuyler Field (Queensbury) won the pole vault with a height of 4.10 meters (13' 5.25”) and sophomore Steve Manos (Elmira/Southside) captured the high jump at 1.88 meters (6' 2”). Senior Drew Hilker (Ithaca)also cleared 1.88 meters in the high jump, but tied for second place since he missed twice at that height while Manos did not miss.

The 4x200-meter relay team of sophomore Dan McManus (Warwick/Warwick Valley), freshman Zac Karpinski (Syracuse/West Genesee), freshman Josh Daves (Huntington) and freshman Dan Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) qualified for ECACs with their second-place time of 1:33.57. Cortland also finished second in the 4x400-meter relay as freshman Nate Francisco (Geneva/Marcus Whitman), sophomore Kyle Fitzpatrick (Washingtonville), freshman Joe Panetta (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) and sophomore Sean Twomey (Cornwall) were timed in 3:38.10.

Fitzpatrick finished second in the 800 meters (1:59.06), while Francisco placed third in the 200 meters (23.39) and fifth in the 400 meters (52.61). Junior Tony Nguyen (Gates/Gates-Chili) finished third in the pole vault at 3.95 meters (12' 11.5”), with Fugazot also cleared 3.95 meters but placed fourth due to two misses at that height versus none for Nguyen.

Junior Sa-id Shakir (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes) finished third in the 55-meter dash (6.72, 6.68 in prelims). Freshman Mike Ofosu (Latham/Shaker) was third in the triple jump at 13.45 meters (44' 1.5”), while freshman P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) was fourth in the event at 13.22 meters (43' 4.5”).

Daves turned in a fourth-place distance of 6.34 meters (20' 9.75”) in the long jump, junior Jacob Schwartz (White Sulfur Springs/Liberty) was fifth in the pole vault at 3.80 meters (12' 5.5”), Karpinski finished fifth in the 200 meters (23.88) and Panetta was fifth in the 800 meters (2:06.17).
