Evans Wins ECAC 100-Yard Freestyle Title; Cortland Finishes Sixth in Team Standings

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Senior Dan Evans (Hamburg) won the 100-yard freestyle and placed in the top 10 in three other events to highlight Cortland's performances at the ECAC Div. III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The three-day meet was held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.

Cortland finished sixth out of 11 schools in the final team standings. Stevens Institute won the title with 1,555.5 points, followed by Geneseo (1,401), Keene State (1,089), New Paltz (1,025.5), Merchant Marine Academy (650) and Cortland (598).

Evans was the fastest of the 83 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.75 seconds. He also finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.61), seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (54.12) and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.04).

Senior Matt Young (Schoharie) finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle (22.17) and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (56.76). Senior Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois) earned three top-16 finishes. He was 11th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.78), 14th in the 100-yard butterfly (54.76) and 15th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:35.64).

Sophomore Travis Burke (Massapequa) placed third in three-meter diving (381.25 points) and 11th in one-meter diving (293.15 points), while freshman Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) was fourth on the one-meter board (357.00 points) and sixth on the three-meter board (345.20 points).

Three Red Dragons finished in 16th place in their events – senior Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:37.72), freshman Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.80) and junior Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.78).

The combination of Evans, Young, VanSickle and freshman Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/home schooled) finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.79). Cortland's other four relays entries each finished in sixth place. Moessinger was a part of all four of those teams. He combined with Nelson, sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence) and Young in the 400-yard medley relay (3:48.42) and swam with Strickland, sophomore Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and Young in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:21.39). Moessinger also teamed with Strickland, VanSickle and Evans in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:27.35) and combined with junior Luis Welch (Avon), freshman Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) and Strickland in the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.54).
