Kristin Barnoski tied the school record in the 50-yard freestyle and anchored the school record-setting 400-yard medley relay
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Junior
Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) tied a school record and provisionally qualified for nationals with a second-place time of 24.14 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle during the first day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Red Dragons also broke the school record in the 400-yard medley relay during the opening day. Junior
Krista Bergquist (West Islip), junior
Taylor Houseman (Wellsville), sophomore
Liz Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) and Barnoski finished fourth in the race in 3:59.33, also an NCAA provisional time.
Barnoski's NCAA "B Cut" 50-yard freestyle time tied Allie Houseman's school record set in 2006. The previous school mark in the 400-yard medley relay was 4:02.10 last year. Bergquist,
Taylor Houseman and Barnoski were also part of that relay along with
Sarah O'Loughlin.
Cortland's 200-yard freestyle relay unit of junior
Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru), Bergquist, senior
Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset) and Barnoski finished third in 1:39.39. Neddo finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.75), with junior Megan Donlevy (Lake Grove/Sachem North) placing eighth (5:19.94, 5:19.29 in prelims).
Sophomore
Danielle McCarthy (Johnson City) finished in eighth place in three-meter diving with 353.95 points (360.20 in prelims). In addition, Bergquist won the consolation heat of the 50-yard freestyle in 25.23 seconds after posting a time of 25.06 in prelims.
Cortland is in fourth place after the first day with 154 points, eight points behind third-place New Paltz. Geneseo leads the meet with 267 points. The competition continues Friday and Saturday at the Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College.
