Cortland Fourth at SUNYAC Championships; Red Dragons Win Three Individual Titles

Kate Ramsbotham finished third in the mile and eighth in the 800-meter run
GENEVA, N.Y. – Cortland earned three individual titles and three runner-up finishes at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Cortland finished in fourth place of eight teams in a tightly contested championship with 102 points. Buffalo State won its first-ever league title with 124 points, followed by Brockport (118), Geneseo (114), Cortland, Fredonia (57), Oneonta (53), Plattsburgh (48) and Oswego (7).

Junior Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) repeated as league champion in the high jump with a height of 5' 3.25”. Junior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) won the 3,000-meter run with an ECAC qualifying time of 10:30.88. Senior Keri Laviska (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) and senior Sarah Kimball (Liverpool) each cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 11' 3.75” in the pole vault. Laviska, however, was declared the winner and Kimball finished second due to number of misses.

Other Red Dragon runners-up were freshman Alyson Dalton (Sherill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) in the 3,000 meters (ECAC-qualifying 10:35.16), behind Holt, and the distance medley relay team of senior Liz Wolff (Syracuse/Henninger), junior Mallory Baker (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), sophomore Jess Stanton (Elmira Heights/Thomas A. Edison) and senior Alanna Hollborn (Islip Terrace/East Islip), which qualified for ECAC's with a time of 13:01.62.

Cortland claimed six of the top seven spots in the pole vault. In addition to Laviska's and Kimball's performances, junior Katie Taber (Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour), junior Nicole Ragard (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley), senior Katie McEvoy (Batavia) and sophomore Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) all cleared 9' 10”. Due to number of misses, Taber finished fourth, Ragard fifth, McEvoy sixth and Wignall seventh.

Junior Kate Ramsbotham (West Islip) finished third in the mile (ECAC-qualifying 5:11.21) and eighth in the 800 meters (2:25.95). Hollborn crossed the line fourth in the mile just behind Ramsbotham in 5:11.47, also an ECAC qualifier, Baker placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:00.30) and sophomore Valerie Winberry (Bay Shore) finished fourth in the shot put (35' 11.25”).

Senior Erin McGrath (Oakdale/Connetquot) and junior Katie Dylag (Williamsville/Williamsville East) finished fifth and sixth in the 5,000 meters in 18:44.30 and 18:54.99, respectively. Sophomore Kristin Vespa (Ossining) was eighth in the event in 19:25.61.

Also scoring points at the meet were the 4x400-meter relay of freshman Becky Zurek (Syracuse/Marcellus), freshman Valerie Basciano (New City/Albertus Magnus), freshman Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland) and sophomore Steph McGrath (Camillus/West Genesee), which finished sixth in 4:21.28, and sophomore Caitlin Sullivan (Elmira Heights/Thomas A. Edison), who placed eighth in the 3,000 meters (11:04.83).
