TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Cortland junior
Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) finished second nationally and tied a school record in the high jump during the opening day of competition at the NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Serikstad cleared 5' 6.5”, the same height as national champion Marlee Berg of Westfield State College (Mass.). Berg, however, was declared the champion due to having one fewer miss than Serikstad in the competition.
Both Serikstad and Berg cleared 5' 1.25” on their first attempt, but Berg was able to leap over 5' 3.25” on her first try compared to Serikstad making it on her second attempt. Both athletes then cleared 5' 5.25” on the first try and took three attempts to record their final heights of 5' 6.5” before failing with the bar at 5' 7.25”.
Serikstad tied the school indoor high jump record set by Susan Gracz in 1992. Serikstad is now a three-time All-American in the high jump – she tied for fourth place at last year's outdoor championships (5' 4.5”) and tied for fifth at last year's indoor nationals (5' 3.25”). The top eight finishers earn All-America honors in each event.
Serikstad is Cortland's lone female competing at nationals. The Red Dragons finished in a four-way tie for 28th place out of 68 schools scoring points in the final team standings.
