Sophomore Eric Parah's goal just nine seconds into the game set the tone for the Red Dragons
MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - Fourteen different players scored goals as the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Morrisville St., 22-0, Sunday afternoon in the final SUNYAC game of the season for both teams. The Red Dragons earned their first shutout since blanking SUNYIT, 25-0, during the 2003 season and improved to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference and will face Oswego at home on Wednesday, April 29, in the league semifinals at a time to be determined. The Mustangs fell to 4-11 and 0-7 and conclude their season versus Medaille on Wednesday.
Junior
Brian Krol (Niskayuna) led the Cortland offense with three goals. Junior
Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) scored a season-high four points on two goals and two assists, and freshman
Eric Richards (Skaneateles) recorded a career-high three points on two goals and an assist. Junior
Tom Burke (Massapequa), sophomore
Frank Padolecchia (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) and freshmen
Justin Battino (Plainview) and
Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) each netted two goals. Freshmen
Tyler Granelli (North Salem/John Jay-Cross River) and
Brendan Bellew (Baldwin) added a goal and two assists, and sophomore
Chris DeLuca (Sayville) chipped in with three assists.
Battino also went 7-for-7 on faceoffs as Cortland won 19-of-25 in the game. Freshman
Kyle Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) did not register a save in the first half and picked up his first collegiate win. Sophomore
Mike Diamond (Farmingdale) saw his first action of the season in the second half and also did not need to stop a shot between the pipes.
For Morrisville St., Jimmy Hodgson started in the cage and made one save in the opening three minutes, 22 seconds before giving way to Michael Hinchey, who stopped seven shots over the final 56:38.
Cortland led, 9-0, at the end of the first quarter, setting the tone with goals from sophomore
Eric Parah (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) nine seconds into the game, Tota just seven second later and Krol at 13:45. The Red Dragons took a 15-0 lead into halftime and led 19-0 at the end of three and added three goals in the final quarter for the 22-0 final.
The Red Dragons outshot the Mustangs, 49-5, and held a 34-14 advantage in ground balls.
