Kimball Breaks SUNYAC Pole Vault Record; Red Dragons Second at Conference Meet

Sarah Kimball won her third straight league pole vault title with a league record height of 12' 1.25"
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior Sarah Kimball (Liverpool) set new SUNYAC and school records in the pole vault and was one of three Cortland individual champions as the Red Dragons placed second at the eight-team State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championshps.

Brockport won its first-ever league title with 176 points, followed by Cortland with 138 points and Geneseo with 130.5 points. Rounding out the standings were Buffalo State (109.5), Oneonta (90), Plattsburgh (68), Fredonia (53) and Oswego (13).

Kimball won her third straight league outdoor title in the pole vault and became the first woman in league and school history to clear the 12-foot mark with her height of 12' 1.25”. The effort is also a new Oneonta facility record and improves on Kimball's NCAA provisional qualifying status.

Senior Alanna Hollborn (Islip Terrace/East Islip) won the 5,000-meter run in an ECAC-qualifying time of 17:46.04 and junior Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) captured the high jump title with an NCAA provisional height of 5' 5”. Serikstad also finished second in the javelin throw at 111' 9”, and her 18 points scored at the meet were tied for third among field performers.

Kimball's win in the pole vault led a Cortland sweep of the top six places in the event, accounting for 36 of the Red Dragons' 138 total team points. Senior Keri Laviska (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) finished second with an NCAA provisional height of 11' 5.75”. Sophomore Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) and junior Katie Taber (Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour) tied for third place and junior Nicole Ragard (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) finished fifth, with all three clearing 10' 0”. The places were determined due to number of misses. Senior Katie McEvoy (Batavia) finished sixth at 9' 6.25”.

Junior Mallory Baker (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash in an ECAC time of 59.34 seconds and freshman Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) qualified for ECACs in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her second-place time of 11:33.85.

Senior Erin McGrath (Oakdale/Connetquot), sophomore Kristin Vespa (Ossining) and junior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) all qualified for the ECAC meet in the 10,000-meter run. McGrath finished third (39:03.64), followed by Vespa in fourth (39:19.47) and Holt in sixth (39:49.80). Cortland's other individual ECAC qualifiers were freshman Brenna Filipello (Bethlehem), who finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.52, 15.81 in prelims), and senior Brittany Brunetto (Beacon), who finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:53.15).

Junior Sarah Lazarus (South New Berlin/Unadilla Valley) finished fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:58.36) and seventh in the 800 meters (2:26.37), while senior Liz Wolff (Syracuse/Henninger) finished sixth in the 800 meters (2:26.07) and seventh in the 1,500 meters (5:05.29).

Cortland turned in fourth-place finishes in two relays. Freshman Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland), Baker, freshman Melissa Seymour (Saranac) and sophomore Kristie O'Reilly (Carmel) teamed for an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:07.26 in the 4x400-meter relay. The 4x100-meter relay of freshman Brittani Sahm (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough), freshman Jenna Evarts (West Islip), Montrose and Baker was clocked at 51.25 seconds

Freshman Ashley Gansle (Loudonville/Shaker) finished fifth in the javelin (91' 2”) and junior Laurel Headwell (Fultonville/Fonda-Fultonville) was sixth in the shot put (34' 10.5”). Junior Katie Dylag (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and sophomore Caitlin Sullivan (Elmira Heights/Thomas A. Edison) finished seventh (19:09.19) and eighth (19:13.66), respectively, in the 5,000 meters.

Other Red Dragons scoring performances included junior Mandy Davey's (Amsterdam) seventh-place time of 1:07.74 in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.36 in prelims), sophomore Valerie Winberry's (Bay Shore) seventh-place discus throw of 114' 9” and Seymour's eighth-place time of 1:04.40 in the 400-meter dash.
