Kyle O'Brien finished in third place with a new school record of 8:57.96, just over a second off the winning time
MARIETTA, OHIO - Cortland junior
Kyle O'Brien (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) earned All-America honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second straight year with a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He broke his own school record in the event with a time of 8:57.96, almost a 10-second improvement over his previous best time. His time is also a new State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) record.
O'Brien was narrowly edged at the finish line by both Hamilton College's Peter Kosgei, who won his third straight national title in the event in 8:56.67, and Wisconsin La Crosse's Paul Zdroik, who placed second in 8:57.87. O'Brien missed second place by less than a tenth of a second in the 16-runner field.
O'Brien improved one spot on his fourth place national finish from last year's championship meet. His six team points gave Cortland a total team score of 16 points. No Red Dragons competed on Saturday, and Cortland finished tied for 14th place out of 81 schools in the final team standings. Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the team title with 46 points.
