CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team erupted for three goals in a 10-minute span in the second half and defeated St. Lawrence, 4-1, in the season-opening game for both teams Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons (1-0) and the Saints (0-1) were deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the second half when Cortland seized control of the game.

Sophomore Bridgette DeSantis (Schenectady/Mohonasen) and junior Casey Reinhardt (Hilton) paced the Red Dragons' offense with a goal and an assist each. Junior Carly Williams (Emerson, NJ) scored a goal, freshman Stacey Wood (New Hyde Park) tallied her first collegiate goal and sophomore Jackie De Luise (Guilderland) contributed an assist. Junior goalie Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made five saves in the game.

Elena Rogers netted St. Lawrence's goal, while Katharine Polido collected an assist on the score. Abby VanGeldern stopped four shots.

Williams gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she scored on a scramble in front after a Red Dragon corner kick. The Saints responded in the 25th minute to knot the game up as Rogers beat Monnier in front with a shot inside the post.

The teams were still tied at 1-1 past the midway point of the second half when Cortland went on its scoring binge. In the 72nd minute, DeSantis scored the game winner off Reinhardt's assist with a looping shot inside the post. Then, with the Saints pushing upfield for the equalizer, Cortland capatilized on Wood's goal, which came off a converted cross from DeSantis. Reinhardt completed the scoring in the 82nd minute with the assist coming from De Luise. The score was Reinhardt's first as a Red Dragon in her first game played.
