CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore
Jackie De Luise (Guilderland) scored her first goal of the season in the second half as the Cortland women's soccer team defeated Hamilton, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0 to start a season for the first time since 1993, while the Continentals suffered their first loss and fell to 2-1.
After a scoreless first half in which Hamilton out shot Cortland, 8-6, but scoring opportunities were rare, Cortland picked up the pressure with two early chances in the second half. In the 52nd minute, De Luise's shot right in front off a corner kick was denied at the goal line by Hamilton sophomore defender Meghan Griesbach (Methuen, MA/Governor's Academy). In the 53rd minute, junior
Casey Reinhardt (Hilton) banged a shot off the right elbow and out of bounds.
Eventually Cortland notched the game's lone goal in the 59th minute. The Red Dragons lofted a corner kick into the box that Hamilton senior goalie Kate Fowler (Branford, CT/Wilton) punched away. The ball remained loose and Cortland junior
Carly Williams (Emerson, NJ) slid a pass to her right. De Luise ran onto the pass and one-timed an 18-yard shot inside the right post for her first goal of the season.
The Continentals pressed late for the equalizer. In the 89th minute, junior Anne Graveley (Queensbury) took a straight on shot from 25 yards out. Red Dragon junior goalie
Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) made the save on the high shot, the ball popped in the air and Monnier secured the rebound. Hamilton had one last chance on a free kick with 15 seconds remaining, but Cortland cleared the ball away from the box and the clock ran out.
Monnier finished with five saves, while Fowler stopped three shots.
