Cortland Sinks Lakers, 2-0, in SUNYAC Opener

Junior Casey Reinhardt assisted on both goals
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Bridgette DeSantis (Schenectady/Mohonasen) scored a goal in each half to lead the Cortland women's soccer team to a 2-0 win versus Oswego Saturday afternoon at Holloway Field in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC and posted their fifth straight shutout. Cortland's 7-0 record is the second-most consecutive wins to start to a season in school history behind the 1978 team that finished the season 11-0. The Lakers dropped to 3-3 and 0-1 with the loss.

Each team had one good chance to open the scoring in the first half but Cortland junior Casey Reinhardt's (Hilton) header off junior Maura Martin's (Chili/Gates-Chili) serve went wide of the right post in the 12th minute and Cortland junior goalie Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) punched away Oswego senior Tricia Sullivan's (Copenhagen) lofted shot from the right side in the 24th minute.

DeSantis put Cortland on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute. Reinhardt fed a through ball into the box and DeSantis just beat Oswego freshman goalie Christina Fergosi (Massapequa) to the ball and tucked a shot inside the right post.

In the second half, Oswego senior Brooke Sherman (Oswego) kept it a 1-0 game when she cleared Cortland freshman Jenn Fox's (New Hyde Park) clean shot off the goal line in the 64th minute after Fox slid the ball past Fergosi. One minute later, however, DeSantis struck again. Reinhardt chipped a pass into the box that freed up DeSantis, who calmly buried a shot inside the right post from eight yards out for her team-high sixth goal of the season.

Monnier finished with three saves for the Red Dragons, while Fergosi stopped two shots for the Lakers.
