Red Dragons Repeat as RPI Kumpf Invitational Champion

Caleb VanSickle won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races and led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team
TROY, N.Y. – Cortland won six individual events and one relay to finish first at the seven-team Kumpf Swimming and Diving Invitational, hosted by RPI. The Red Dragons claimed their second straight team title and fourth in the past six years with 575.5 points. Ithaca finished second with 530 points, followed by RPI (476), Clarkson (265.5), Vassar (210), Oneonta (170) and Skidmore (97).

Cortland also finished 6-0 in the dual-scoring portion of the meet and is now 11-2 on the season. The Red Dragons defeated Ithaca 147-96, RPI 152-91, Clarkson 183.5-53.5, Vassar 180-60, Oneonta 198-39 and Skidmore 191-48.

Three Red Dragons won two events each. Senior Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois) finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.05) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.93). Senior Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.81) and 500-yard freestyle (4:58.89), and senior Dan Evans (Hamburg) captured the 50-yard freestyle (21.28) and 100-yard freestyle (46.82).

The combination of VanSickle, senior Matt Young (Schoharie), freshman Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/home schooled) and Evans won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:15.53. Cortland's 400-yard medley relay of sophomore Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor), sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence), sophomore Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and Young finished second in 3:41.92.

Freshman Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) finished in the top four in three events. He was third in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.34) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.14) and fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:40.62). Freshman Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) placed second in one-meter diving (251.65 points) and third in three-meter diving (259.40 points), and Strickland finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.40).

Cortland's “B” relay entries each finished in the top five. The quartet of junior Luis Welch (Avon), freshman Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), freshman Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) and junior James McCabe (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) placed fourth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:48.80). McCabe, junior Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), freshman Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Scheemaker finished fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.65).

Also placing in the top five for the Red Dragons were sophomore Travis Burke (Massapequa), who finished fourth in both diving events (231.40 points on one-meter, 239.45 points on three-meter), McCabe with a fourth-place time of 22.48 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, Young with a fourth-place time of 49.69 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, and Drew with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.84).
