POTSDAM, N.Y. – Keith Murray (Queens/St. John's Northwestern Military Academy) scored 13 points and Felix Llanos (Queens/Holy Cross) tallied 12 points as Clarkson held off Cortland, 58-54, in a non-league game.
Rey Jefferson (Budd Lake, NJ/Morristown Beard) added 11 points and Brandon Linton (Queens/Holy Cross) recorded six points, five blocked shots and four assists for the Golden Knights (6-2).
Senior
Paul Oliver (Phoenix) led Cortland (6-3) with 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshman
Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored 10 points and freshman
Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) finished with nine points. Senior
Ben Nagle (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) added eight points and easily established a career best with 16 rebounds.
Clarkson led 18-8 with seven minutes left in the first half, but the Red Dragons got back to within three at halftime at 25-22. Cortland took its first lead since 2-0 when
Jeff LaMont's (Hannibal) three-pointer put the Red Dragons up 33-31 with 15:01 remaining.
Cortland led for the last time at 35-33 on a Nagle put-back with 13:50 left. Jefferson, however, responded with a three-pointer 20 seconds later to give the Golden Knights a 36-35 lead.
The hosts led by as much as six points four more times over the next 12 minutes, the last at 51-45 after two Murray free throws with 53 seconds left. Three-pointers by Winter and Smith, sandwiched around two more Murray foul shots, drew Cortland within 53-51 with 30 seconds on the clock.
Llanos made two foul shots with 20 seconds left and, following two Cortland missed field goals, Linton hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to put Clarkson up 57-51.
Dustin Marshall (Newfield) made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three, but Murray made one foul shot to seal the victory.
