WATERFORD, CONN. – The Cortland men's cross country team finished eighth out of 19 schools and was the fourth Div. III finisher at the Connecticut College Invitational, held at the Harkness Memorial State Park.
The Red Dragons scored 213 points, seven behind seventh-place Div. I University of Hartford. The University of Connecticut and Tufts University tied for the team title with 59 points. The College of New Jersey was third (123), followed by Fairfield (158), Connecticut College (168), Southern Connecticut State (174), Hartford, Cortland, MIT (253) and Oneonta (273) in the top 10.
Junior
Brendan Ward (St. James/Smithtown East) finished 24th in the 225-runner field with a time of 26 minutes, 26 seconds over 8,000 meters. TCNJ's Tom Bocchino won the race in 25:27.
Cortland's next five runners all placed in the top 60. Senior
Brendan Brethel (Lynbrook) was 44th in 26:51, sophomore
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) placed 52nd in 27:00 and senior
Nick Jeror (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was 53rd in 27:02. Junior
Jon Tuttle (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) and freshman
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) finished 59th and 60th, respectively, each in an official time of 27:09.
Freshman
Casey Austin (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) rounded out the Red Dragons' top seven with a 74th-place time of 27:19. Also crossing the finish line in the top 100 were sophomore
Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in 92nd (27:36) and freshman
Ryan Perry (Amherst/Williamsville North) in 93rd (27:37).
