CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman
Matt Distler (Glens Falls) and
Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) each won two individual events as the Cortland men's swimming and diving team opened its dual-meet season with a 124-72 win over Buffalo State. Distler won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.51 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly in 56.78, while Strothenke captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.26) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.80).
Four other Red Dragons posted individual victories. Sophomore
Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:48.06) and sophomore
Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) won the 100-yard freestyle (50.06). Freshman
Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.16), while junior
Danny Salvatore (Clarence) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.58) as an exhibition entry.
Cortland opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Junior
Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor), sophomore
Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), freshman Gregory MacDonald (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) and Blaszak won that race in 1:41.95. As an exhibition entry, the 200-yard freestyle relay of Strothenke, Blaszak, MacDonald and junior
Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) turned in the fastest time in 1:32.28.
