CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's hockey team opened up a 4-0 lead early in the third period and held on for a 4-3 win versus visiting Buffalo St. Saturday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. With the win, the Red Dragons evened their record at 1-1 overall and in the conference, while the Bengals fell to 0-2 on the season and in league play.

Junior Corey John (Albany/SUNY Plattsburgh) paced the Cortland offense with a goal and two assists. Junior Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minnesota St.-Mankato) recorded a goal and an assist, and junior Matty Davie (Brooklyn/NY Apple Core) and freshman Matt McNamee (Salt Lake City, UT/Weyburn Red Wings) each scored once. Seniors Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and Justin Porpora (Hauppauge/NY Bobcats), sophomore Chris Kaleta (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats) collected one assist apiece. Senior goalie Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) made 32 saves, including 16 in the third period.

Sophomores Zach Hale (Sandy, UT/Helena Bighorns) and Trevor McKinney (Oakwood, ON/Peterborough Liftlock Stars) registered a goal and an assist each for the Bengals. Freshman Mike Zannella (Ithaca/Cornwall Colts) scored his first career goal. Freshman Anthony Orange (Plainfield, IL/Motor City Metal Jackets) chipped in with two assists, while sophomore Drew Klin (Lancaster/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman John Corrigan (Wethersfield, CT/Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) had one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Kevin Carr (Unionville, ON/Atlanta Jr. Knights) turned aside 32 shots.

After a scoreless first period, Cortland scored three times in the second, twice on the power play, to take a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes. Lompado opened the scoring with a slap shot from the left point through traffic with the extra man at two minutes, 45 seconds. Davie then added a power-play goal at 5:29 on a wrist shot from the left circle. John upped the lead to 3-0 at 19:04 when his wrister from the left circle went off a Buffalo St. defenseman and past Carr.

Just 1:12 into the third period, McNamee scored the first goal of his career and what proved to be the game winner on the power play with a slap shot from the right point. The Bengals began chipping away at the lead courtesy of Cortland penalties. Hale made it a 4-1 game at 7:55 with a wrist shot from the right circle on the power play. Zannella pulled the Bengals to within 4-2, again with the man advantage, at 12:41 on a shot from the left side. At 14:36, McKinney scored on a one timer from the right circle on the power play and Buffalo St. trailed just 4-3. The Bengals pulled Carr for an extra skater at the 18:55 mark but couldn't score the equalizer.
