Cortland Wins SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Crown

FULTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Cortland women's cross country team won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title with a narrow two-point victory over SUNY Geneseo at the league championship meet at the Battle Island State Park Golf Course.

Cortland, ranked 23rd nationally, won its 16th SUNYAC title with a final score of 32 points. Geneseo, ranked sixth nationally, scored 34 points. Plattsburgh finished third in the 10-team field with 81 points. Cortland captured its first league crown since winning 15 consecutive titles from 1984-98 and snapped Geneseo's 10-year win streak. Cortland head coach Steve Patrick was selected as the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Four Red Dragons earned first-team All-SUNYAC honors with finishes in the top seven. In addition to Dalton, senior Erin Keaveney (West Hempstead/Kellenberg Memorial) finished fourth (23:02.67), senior Kristin Vespa (Ossining) placed sixth (23:11.15) and sophomore Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) finished seventh (23:11.31).

Keaveney earned a spot in the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Hall of Fame, which is awarded to runners who place in the top five once, the top 10 twice or the top 15 three times. Dalton had already earned a spot with her fifth-place finish in 2009.

Freshman Dayna Eikeseth (Staten Island/Tottenville) earned second-team All-SUNYAC honors with a 13th-place time of 23:32.23. The eighth through 15th place finishers are second-team all-conference. Rounding out Cortland's top seven runners were senior Caitlin Sullivan (Elmira/Thomas A. Edison) in 22nd place (23:51.71) and freshman Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) in 24th place (23:58.90).
