ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore
Danielle Groneman (East Islip) scored three goals in the opening 35 minutes as the nationally 10th-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated Rochester, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in damp and chilly conditions at Rochester's Fauver Stadium. The Red Dragons pushed their record to 10-1 on the season with the victory, while the Yellowjackets fell to 3-6.
Senior
Brenda Semit (Holland Patent) recorded an assist for Cortland, and senior goalie
Ashley Hughes (Selden/Comsewogue) made three saves for her 10th win of the season.
Junior Allison Beardsley (Weedsport) scored Rochester's goal. Freshman goalie Madison Wagner (Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel) turned aside seven shots for the Yellowjackets.
Groneman opened the scoring when she deflected a shot by Semit on a penalty-corner play four minutes, 46 seconds into the game for her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore
Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) kept the Yellowjackets off the scoreboard with a defensive save on Rochester's first shot of the game at the 8:04 mark. Less than four minutes later, Groneman made it a 2-0 game as she recorded a rebound goal after junior Darragh Kerr (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made a defensive save on Cortland sophomore
Sara Woodward's (Pine Plains) shot.
Beardsley cut the lead in half with a backhanded shot from the top of the arc at 24:36, but Groneman gave Cortland it's two-goal lead back just 2:25 before intermission on a rebound goal after Wagner denied freshman
Erin Smith's (Greene) bid in front. The score by Groneman was her team-high seventh of the season.
The Red Dragons' two-goal cushion help up over the final 35 minutes as they earned the non-conference road win.
