CANTON, N.Y. – The nationally 22nd-ranked Cortland women's cross country team finished second out of four teams at the Hoffmann Invitational, hosted by St. Lawrence University. The host Saints, ranked second nationally, won with 17 points. Cortland finished with 55 points, followed by the University of Ottawa (78) and Clarkson (90).
The Red Dragons held out some of their upperclassmen in preparation for next weekend's Connecticut College Invitational. Freshmen
Dayna Eikeseth (Staten Island/Tottenville) and
Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 52-runner field. Eikeseth covered the wet and soft 6,000-meter course in 24:15 and Cotey was timed at 24:21. Both runners ran a controlled race for two miles and closed hard late to move into their final spots.
Cortland's next three finishers were also freshmen.
Ally Borriello (Montgomery/Valley Central) finished in 16th place (24:51), while
Laura Quercia (Marcellus) and
Emily Ingalls (Geneseo) worked together late in the race to place 29th (26:19) and 30th (26:48), respectively. Senior
Stephanie McGrath (Camillus/West Genesee) also ran a smart race and finished 33rd in 26:48. Only six runners competed for the Red Dragons.
St. Lawrence senior Wendy Pavlus, the defending NCAA Div. III individual champion, won the race in 22:11.
