The SUNY Cortland football team has earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III tournament by virtue of winning a three-way New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) tiebreaker between the tri-champion Red Dragons, Rowan University and Montclair State University.
Cortland, Rowan and Montclair State each finished 8-1 in NJAC play after wins by Rowan and Montclair on Saturday. The teams were even on the NJAC's first tiebreaker, three-way head-to-head (all 1-1), and were even on the second tiebreaker, results versus the league's number four team, then number five team, and so on down the standings.
The league's third tiebreaker is opponents' opponents' winning percentage (OOWP) in all of Div. III. The NCAA informed the conference office Saturday night that Cortland finished its regular season with an OOWP of .514, Montclair finished at .504 and Rowan finished at .502.
Cortland (9-1 overall) is guaranteed a spot in the 32-team NCAA playoffs, while Rowan and Montclair (each 9-1 overall also) will hope for at-large berths. NCAA selections and pairings will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 14, sometime between 3 and 3:30 p.m. on ESPNews. The NCAA first-round games will be held on campus sites Saturday, Nov. 20.
