ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Cortland men's cross country team placed 12th out of 39 schools at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regional Championships. The meet was hosted by SUNY Oneonta at Fortin Park.
Geneseo won the team title with 47 points, followed by St. Lawrence (55), NYU (101), Rochester (124) and The College of New Jersey (200). The Knights and the Saints earned automatic berths into the NCAA Div. III Championships hosted by Wartburg College next Saturday.
Junior Brendan Ward (St. James/Smithtown East) was Cortland's top individual with a 48th-place time of 26:19.7 over the 8,000-meter course. Geneseo's Lee Berube won the regional title in 24:27.8. Senior Brendan Brethel (Lynbrook) placed 68th in 26:38.7 and freshman Casey Austin (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) finished 74th in 26:43.8.
Rounding out Cotland's scorers were sophomore Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) in 79th (26:48.8) and freshman Jon Tuttle (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) in 84th (26:51.2). Cortland's other two participants were freshman Cody Amengual (West Babylon), who finished 97th (27:05.0) and sophomore Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who crossed the finish line in 122nd place (27:31.2). A total of 268 runners competed.
