Red Dragons Place Fifth at NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regionals

Freshman Dayna Eikeseth earned all-region honors with her 34th-place finish

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Cortland women's cross country team placed fifth out of 33 schools at the NCAA Div. III Atlantic Regional Championships. The meet was hosted by SUNY Oneonta at Fortin Park.

St. Lawrence won the team title with 59 points, followed by Geneseo (78), NYU (104), Plattsburgh (124) and Cortland (145). The Saints and the Knights earned automatic berths into the NCAA Div. III Championships hosted by Wartburg College next Saturday, while Cortland awaits a possible at-large bid to the championships.

Three competitors earned all-region honors for the Red Dragons with top-35 finishes. Junior Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) was Cortland's top finisher, placing fourth with a time of 21:59.8 over 6,000 meters, repeating as an all-region runner. St. Lawrence senior Wendy Pavlus won the race in 21:11.9. Senior Kristin Vespa (Ossining) crossed the finish line in 30th place with a time of 23:15.3, and freshman Dayna Eikeseth (Staten Island/Tottenville) finished 34th in 23:20.9.

Also scoring for Cortland were sophomore Jordyn Naylon (Fairport), 39th in 23:28.1, and junior Hannah Hoffman (Rome/Rome Free Academy), 47th in 23:36.8. Senior Caitlin Sullivan (Elmira/Thomas A. Edison) and freshman Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) rounded out Cortland's contigent, finishing 51st (23:40.3) and 98th (24:48.1), respectively. A total of 236 runners competed.
