Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) and sophomore
Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) led four Cortland double-figure scorers with 16 points apiece as the Red Dragons opened the season with a 71-54 non-league victory at Elmira College.
McMahon made 8-of-10 shots from the floor and also led the Red Dragons with seven rebounds and four blocked shots in his collegiate debut. Smith established new career bests with his 16 points and three assists.
Sophomore
Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) nailed 3-of-5 three-pointers and finished with 13 points and five assists. Senior
Dustin Marshall (Newfield) added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Also for Cortland, sophomore
Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) recorded six points and three steals and junior
Nick Sutedjo (Webster/Webster Schroeder) added six points, including two treys.
Elmira's Bobby DiPiazza (Wyckoff, NJ/Bergen Catholic) nearly recorded a triple-double in the setback. He scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out eight assists. Josh Keys (Bel Air, MD/CM Wright) made 3-of-7 three-pointers in an 11-point effort, while Zach Simpson (Savona/Campbell-Savona) finished with nine points and six rebounds.
The game was tied at 22-22 with 2:43 left in the first half after a Simpson layup. Cortland finished the half on a 6-0 run, behind four points from Hefele and a Marshall layup, and led 28-22 at halftime.
Leading 33-28, the Red Dragons went on a 13-4 run in less than three minutes, capped by a Smith three-pointer, to take a 14-point lead. Elmira closed to within single digits only two times after that, the last at 58-49 on a Simpson foul shot with 7:58 to go. Marshall responded with a three-pointer and, following an Elmira basket, Hefele and Marshall each hit buckets that pushed the lead back to 14 points with 5:50 left. Cortland, which shot 58 percent in the second half, held the Soaring Eagles to just three points over the final seven minutes.
Cortland will compete at the NYU Tip-Off Tournament Saturday and Sunday. The Red Dragons will play Emmanuel College on Saturday at 3 p.m. and will face either NYU or Moravian on Sunday at 1 or 3 p.m.
