NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sophomore
Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored 18 points and dished out three assists as Cortland earned a 74-63 win over Emmanuel College of Massachusetts in the opening round of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament. The Red Dragons (2-0) will face the host Violets in the championship game Sunday at 3 p.m. NYU defeated Moravian (Pa.) in Saturday's other first-round contest.
Winter hit 7-of-13 shots from the field and all four of his free throws. Senior
Dustin Marshall (Newfield) added 14 points and five rebounds, sophomore
Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) scored a career-high 11 points and registered three steals, and sophomore
Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) tallied 10 points.
In addition, freshman
Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, while freshman
Maurice Kearney (Uniondale) totaled six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Emmanuel (0-2) was led by Xavier Everson's 21 points and 10 rebounds. He made 9-of-14 shots, including 3-of-5 three-pointers. Tyrone Buchanan scored 13 points and Andre Fuller finished with 10 points.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half. Cortland held a 35-32 lead at halftime and never trailed in the second half. The Saints pulled to within five at 50-45 on two Patrick Ramsey free throws with 10:51 left. Cortland then went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a Marshall three-pointer and two Hefele buckets, and led 59-45 with 8:18 remaining.
Emmanuel made a final push and got back within six at 64-58 on Buchanan's trey with 4:51 left. Winter's three-point play at the four-minute mark pushed the lead to nine and McMahon followed with two foul shots at the 3:46 mark. The lead never dropped below double-figures after that.
