Jewell Stops 37 Shots in 3-1 Win vs. Hamilton

Freshman Matt McNamee assisted on Cortland's third goal
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior goalie Dan Jewell (Medford/NSA) turned aside 37 shots and junior Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Cortland men's hockey team to a 3-1 win versus Hamilton Tuesday night in non-conference action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 3-7-1 on the season, while the Continentals slipped to 2-2.

Senior Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and junior Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minn. St.-Mankato) each scored a goal for Cortland with juniors Ryan Durocher (Canton/Boston Bulldogs) and Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) and freshmen Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats) and Matt McNamee (Salt Lake City, UT/Weyburn Red Wings) each chipping in with one assist.

Junior Anthony Scarpino (Meadville, PA/Hobart College) netted the Continentals' goal, and sophomore Anthony Ruberto (Stoney Creek, ON/Cardinal Newman Catholic) earned an assist. Sophomore goalie Cam Gibbar (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Academy) made 29 saves in his first start of the season.

After a scoreless first period, Lompado gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at six minutes, 25 seconds of the second with a wrist shot into the upper right corner from the slot. Just 13 seconds later, Gold stuffed in a loose puck in front to make it a 2-0 game. Scarpino put Hamilton on the scoreboard at 7:02 of the second. Ruberto won a faceoff back to Scarpino, whose wrist shot from the left eluded Jewell.

Christiano gave the Red Dragons an insurance goal at 17:33 of the third. With the Continentals pressing for the equalizer, McNamee sent a long pass from blue line to blue line. Christiano gained possession in stride and ripped a shot inside the right post on a breakaway. Hamilton pulled Gibbar for an extra skater with 1:13 remaining, but a Hamilton icing 27 seconds later sent Gibbar back between the pipes. The Continentals pulled their sophomore goalie again with 32 seconds remaining but couldn't get a quality scoring chance.
