FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team advanced to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament finals for the 25th time in the 27-year history of the event with a 3-0 semifinal victory over Geneseo. The Red Dragons (32-7) won by set scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-18. The Knights finish the season with a 15-22 mark.
Cortland will play defending league champion New Paltz in a rematch of last year's title match Saturday at 2 p.m. The Hawks (28-10) defeated host Fredonia in four sets in Friday's first semifinal contest. Cortland has won 16 league titles, the last in 2007. The only years the Red Dragons failed to advance to the finals were 1994 and 2008.
Junior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) led the Red Dragons with 14 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. She finished with a .429 attack percentage (14 kills, two errors in 28 attempts). Junior
Sheena Asibey (Brentwood) had 10 kills and a .440 attack percentage (two errors, 18 attempts) and junior
Kaitlyn Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) added eight kills and six blocks.
Sophomore
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) registered 30 assists and nine digs. Sophomore
Erin Carrino (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and junior
Jaclyn Lawrence (Marilla/Iroquois Central) finished with seven and six digs, respectively.
Cortland finished with a .322 team attack percentage, including a .417 mark in the first set and a .419 effort in the second set.
Cortland jumped out to 5-0 and 8-1 leads in the first set. Leading 13-8, the Red Dragons scored nine straight points to put the set out of reach. The key run in the second set was a 6-0 stretch that turned a 5-5 tie into an 11-5 lead. Cortland led the third set 13-12 before scoring five straight points. The lead was at least three points the rest of the way.
