McManus Double-Winner in 174.5-125.5 Loss to Ithaca

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team suffered its first dual-meet loss of the season as the Red Dragons dropped a 174.5-125.5 decision to visiting Ithaca College. Cortland is 2-1 on the season, while Ithaca improves to 3-0.

Freshman Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) won two events for the Red Dragons. He captured the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:21.51 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.57. He also placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.89).

Freshman Matt Distler (Glens Falls) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.92) and was second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.26). Sophomore Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.19) and sophomore Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) was first on one-meter diving (262.40 points).

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.99) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.05). Junior Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.51) and junior Travis Burke (Massapequa) was the runner-up in one-meter diving (251.40 points).

Cortland earned runner-up finishes in both relays. Nelson, sophomore Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), junior Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and Distler finished the 400-yard medley relay in 3:41.93, just 0.60 seconds behind Ithaca. Distler, sophomore Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East), sophomore Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Hanifin were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.33).
