Distler Wins Three as Red Dragons Beat Oneonta, 141-133

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Matt Distler (Glens Falls) won three individual events as Cortland defeated visiting Oneonta, 141-133, in a dual meet at Holsten Pool. The Red Dragons improved to 3-2 with the victory.

Distler captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.51), the 50-yard freestyle (22.23) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.73). Sophomore Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) was the 100-yard freestyle winner (49.02) and junior Danny Salvatore (Clarence) touched the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.49).

Junior Travis Burke (Massapequa) finished first in three-meter diving (287.55 points) and junior Judd Simon (Oneida) turned in the fastest time as an exhibition entry in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.44).

Cortland opened the meet with a victory by sophomore Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg), Salvatore, freshman Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) and Maximowicz in the 200-yard medley relay. The Red Dragons also placed first as an exhibition entry in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the combination of freshman Luke Strothenke (New Paltz), Maximowicz, freshman Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) and Distler (3:16.23).

Hanifin and Nelson each earned a pair of runner-up finishes. Hanifin was second behind Distler in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:34.93) and 500-yard freestyle (4:59.73), while Nelson was second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.67) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.77). Strothenke was second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.84) and Simon finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.02).

Other Cortland runner-up finishers included sophomore Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.42), freshman Gregory MacDonald (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.90) and sophomore Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) in one-meter diving (268.15 pts.).
