CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Elmira men's hockey team scored three power-play goals and added a short-handed score to defeat host Cortland, 5-1, Saturday night in non-conference action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 3-10-1 with the loss. The Soaring Eagles improved to 7-5-2 with the win.

Junior Peter Lompado (Staten Island/Minn. St.-Mankato) scored Cortland's goal with juniors Ryan Markell (Columbus, OH/Ohio St.) and Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) collecting assists. Junior goalie Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) made 22 saves.

Junior Brendan Sanders (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Vipers) led Elmira with a goal and two assists. Juniors Darcy Vaillancourt (Bonfield, ON/Innisfil Lakers) and Christian Morissette (Beaconsfield, QC/RPI) had a goal and assist, and junior John Clewlow (Brampton, ON/Dixie Bee Hives) and freshman Etienne Archambault (St. Hyacinthe, QC/Longeuil) contributed one goal apiece. Sophomore goalie Darren McDonald (Stittsville, ON/Nepean Raiders) stopped 29 shots.

Vaillancourt gave the Soaring Eagles the lead at nine minutes, four seconds of the opening period with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle on the power play. Morissette made it a 2-0 game after two periods with the man advantage when he scored on a wraparound at 16:49 of the second.

At 7:11 of the third period, Archambault buried a wrist shot from the slot into the upper right corner to push Elmira's lead to 3-0. Twenty-five seconds after the score, Elmira took a penalty but netted a short-handed score by Clewlow after a Cortland turnover in its own defensive zone. The Red Dragons finally got on the scoreboard at 13:27 of the third period. Lompado scored on a slap shot from the point after Cortland won the faceoff just four seconds after going on the power play. Sanders completed the scoring at 14:55 with Elmira's third power-play goal when he converted a backhand shot after Vaillancourt's slap shot deflected off a Cortland defenseman.
