Cortland Wins SLU Holiday Relays; Fairbanks and Bonnell Earn Two Victories Each

CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) and sophomore Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) each won two individual events as Cortland finished first at the six-team St. Lawrence University Holiday Relays.

Cortland finished with 186 points, easily ahead of St. Lawrence's 109 points. Oneonta (95), Plattsburgh (44), Utica (12) and Delhi (10) also competed.

Bonnell set a meet record with her time of 27.05 seconds in the 200-meter dash and qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships with a winning performance of 7.43 seconds in the 55-meter dash. Fairbanks won the mile run (5:21.80) and the 800 meters (2:23.60). She was also part of the winning 4x400-meter relay that set a meet record in 4:17.94. Freshman Allison Boriello (Montgomery/Valley Central) led off the relay, followed by sophomore Jordyn Naylon (Fairport), Fairbanks and freshman Colleen Fischman (Orchard Park/Hamburg).

Sophomore Katie Darling (Delhi/Delaware Academy) qualified for ECAC's with her winning time of 8.91 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles and junior Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland) won the 400 meters (1:01.06). Montrose also scored with a fifth-place time of 27.64 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Graduate student Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) qualified for ECAC's in the high jump with her second-place height of 1.58 meters (5' 2.25”). Naylon finished second behind Fairbanks in both the mile (5:25.95) and the 800 meters (2:24.62). Sophomore Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) was second in the triple jump at 10.54 meters (34' 7”) and tied for second in the long jump at 4.95 meters (16' 3”).

Sophomore Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) was also part of the second-place tie in the long jump (4.95 meters/16' 3”) and finished third in the triple jump at 10.46 meters (34' 4”). Sophomore Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) was the shot put runner-up at 11.01 meters (36' 1.5”), junior Brenna Filipello (Selkirk/Bethlehem) finished second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.20) and freshman Bianca Benavides (Coram/Longwood) was second in the 55-meter dash (7.60, 7.58 in prelims).

Freshman Trisha Clark (Pulaski) placed third in the 400 meters (1:02.84) and junior Brittani Sahm (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) was third in the 55-meter dash (7.68). Clark and Sahm comprised half of the 4x200-meter relay team that finished third in 1:51.17. Sahm started the relay, followed by Montrose, Clark and junior Val Basciano (New City/Albertus Magnus).

Sophomore Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) turned in two scoring efforts. She was third in the high jump at 1.53 meters (5' 0.25”) and was sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.77). Basciano finished fourth in the 400 meters (1:02.86) and freshman Tara Kickel (West Islip) was fourth in the 55-meter dash (7.70).

Junior Ashley Gansle (Loudonville/Shaker) finished fifth in the shot put (10.36 meters/34' 0”) and freshman Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) crossed the line fifth in the mile (5:32.99). Boriello recorded sixth-place finishes in both the mile (5:35.84) and the 800 meters (2:30.26), and freshman Alex Budd (Riverhead) finished sixth in the high jump (1.48 meters/4' 10.25”).
