Matt Young recorded an NCAA "B" cut in the 50-yard freestyle and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior
Dan Evans (Hamburg)set a new conference and school record in the 50-yard freestyle during the opening complete day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Cortland is second out of nine teams after Day 1 with 203 points. Geneseo leads with 253 points, followed by Cortland, New Paltz (166), Fredonia (119) and Oswego (97) in the top five.
Evans won the event in 20.90 seconds for his second straight title. It was his preliminary time of 20.64 seconds, however, that broke the previous SUNYAC conference and championship meet record of 20.73 seconds set by Geneseo's Charlie Hake in 2008. Evans also recorded an NCAA “B” cut in the event and eclipsed his own school record of 20.89 seconds established last season.

Matt Young (Schoharie), junior
James McCabe (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) and freshman
Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:23.72. Evans, Young and McCabe were also part of last year's winning entry in that event.
Young finished second in the 50-yard freestyle behind Evans with an NCAA “B” cut time of 21.05 seconds. He also anchored the 400-yard medley relay team that placed third in 3:31.04. Sophomore
Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) swam the opening backstroke leg, followed by sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence) in the breaststroke, senior
Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois) in the butterfly and Young in the freestyle.
Senior
Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.38), freshman
Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/home schooled) was sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.90, 1:58.81 prelims) and sophomore
Travis Burke (Massapequa) finished sixth in one-meter diving (428.40 points). Burke's score meets NCAA qualifying standards.
In addition, Moessinger was seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.91), Maximowicz finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.23, 21.96 prelims) and freshman
Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the “B” final in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.42) and was ninth overall.
