Barnoski Part of Two School Records at Day 1 of SUNYAC Championships

Kristin Barnoski established a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle and anchored two winning relays, one that set a school record
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) set a school record with her winning time in the 50-yard freestle and was part of two winning relays, one in a school-record time, during the first complete day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Cortland is second in the nine-team field after the opening day. Geneseo leads with 246 points, followed by Cortland (188), Fredonia (176), Oswego (130) and New Paltz (128) in the top five.

Barnoski broke the school record and notched an NCAA “B” cut with her winning time of 24.03 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. She held a share of the previous record of 24.14 seconds along with Allie Houseman (2006).

Barnoski swam the anchor leg on the winning 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. The 400-yard medley relay finished in 3:56.78, an NCAA “B” cut time and easily better than the previous school record of 3:59.33 set last year. Senior Krista Bergquist (West Islip) swam the opening backstroke leg in a school-record time of 59.57 seconds, followed by senior Taylor Houseman (Wellsville) in the breaststroke, freshman Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North) in the butterfly and Barnoski in the freestyle. Bergquist, Houseman and Barnoski were all part of the previous school-record relay.

Cortland's winning time of 1:38.23 in the 200-yard freestyle relay missed an NCAA “B” cut by just 0.11 seconds. Senior Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru) opened the relay for the Red Dragons, followed by sophomore Michelle Seeger (Oneonta), Bergquist and Barnoski.

Houseman recorded a runner-up time of 2:12.89 in the 200-yard individual medley and Bergquist finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86). Other scorers for the Red Dragons included senior Lauryn Kaznowski (Kingston) with a sixth-place finish on three-meter diving (384.00 points), sophomore Laura Bohneberg (Lockport) with a seventh-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.90) and senior Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) with an eighth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.33, 5:19.95 prelims).
