Dan Evans (Hamburg) won his 200-yard freestyle and sophomore
Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) set a school record in the 100-yard backstroke during the second day of competition at the SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Red Dragons held on to second place in the nine-team field with one day remaining. Geneseo leads with 530 points, followed by Cortland (458), New Paltz (393), Fredonia (214) and Oswego (198) in the top five.
Cortland won the 200-yard medley relay with an NCAA “B” cut and meet record time of 1:34.42. Drew swam the opening backstroke leg, followed by sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence) in the breaststroke, Evans in the butterfly and senior
Matt Young (Schoharie) in the freestyle. They broke the previous meet record of 1:35.20 set by Cortland's Brian Williams, Matt Schilling,
Brian Tobin and Matt Mitchell in 1992. Tobin is Cortland's current head coach.
The Red Dragons also claimed the 800-yard freestyle relay title as Evans, senior
Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois), freshman
Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) and senior
Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) were clocked in 6:59.91.
Evans won his second individual title in two days with his NCAA “B” cut time of 1:41.85 in the 200-yard freestyle. Evans captured the event for the second straight year and has won the 50-yard and 200-yard freestyle races at this year's meet.
Drew erased a 12-year-old school record in the 100-yard backstroke with his second-place time of 52.83 seconds. The previous mark of 53.06 seconds was set by Kevin Crossman in 1998.
Sophomore
Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (52.50), VanSickle was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.72) and Moessinger finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (53.24). Salvatore touched the wall fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.16) and Young was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.28).
Also placing in the top eight of individual events were freshman
Matt Blaszak (West Seneca/West Seneca East) in the 200-yard freestyle (7th place, 1:47.88, 1:47.08 prelims), senior
Tim Harroun (Tonawanda) in the 100-yard breaststroke (7th place, 1:00.96, 1:00.62 prelims) and junior
Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) in the 400-yard individual medley (8th place, 4:21.53, 4:19.74 prelims).
