Red Dragons Defeat Babson and Berry to Start NTC Spring Games

Katie Finch retired the final 20 Babson batters and finished with a one-hitter
CLERMONT, FLA. – The Cortland softball team, ranked sixth nationally in Division III, extended its winning streak to six games with victories over Babson College of Massachusetts, 5-0, and Berry College of Georgia, 7-4, at the National Training Center Spring Games. The Red Dragons improved to 6-2 with the wins and will play four more games in Clermont – two on Wednesday and two on Thursday.

Senior Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) pitched a one-hitter for Cortland versus Babson. She allowed a one-out double to Jessica Pashos in the top of the first inning before retiring the final 20 batters she faced. She finished with 12 strikeouts.

Junior Donnalyn Cross (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) finished 3-for-4 with a triple, double and RBI and sophomore Jessica Harman (Penfield) hit an RBI double.

Sophomore Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek) earned the victory over Berry after scattering seven hits and four walks over seven innings. She struck out two batters and gave up only one earned run. Harman finished 2-for-2 with an RBI double and two sacrifices. Junior Brooke Weidman (Perkinsville/Wayland-Cohocton) and freshman Cassie Kardias (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) each went 2-for-3 with a triple and double, while senior Emily Ringen (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) was 2-for-3.

In the game versus Babson, Cortland struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cross led off with a triple and Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) walked and stole second. A passed ball scored Cross and moved Meola to third. Following a Kayla Lynch (Albany/Colonie) walk, Ringen hit a sacrifice fly to score Meola. Stoddard was hit by a pitch two batters later and Katie Fusco (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) hit an RBI single.

An RBI double by Cross extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth and Harman doubled off the fence to drive in the Red Dragons' final run in the fifth.

Against Berry, Cortland plated four runs in the top of the second on a Kardias RBI double, a two-out, two-run double by Weidman and, after Weidman took third on the throw home, a Cross RBI single. The Lady Vikings got a run back in the bottom of the third when Kimberly Treese drew a two-out walk, went to second on a Betsy Lawson single and scored on Kristen Stoll's RBI single.

Cortland scored in the fourth when Weidman tripled with one out and scored on a Cross sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Kardias led off with a triple and scored on an errant pickoff throw with two outs, and in the seventh Ringen singled with two outs and scored on a Harman RBI double.

Berry made the game interesting with three runs in the bottom of the seventh with the combination of two walks and three Cortland errors. The Lady Vikings had runners on first and second and the tying run at the plate, but Rowell induced a groundout to end the game.
