Cortland Opens SUNYAC Slate With Sweep at Oswego

Andersen Gardner hit a pair of two-run doubles in the opening game
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Nationally 24th-ranked Cortland opened its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Oswego. The Red Dragons (11-5 overall) won the first game, 11-2, and the second game, 7-2. Oswego is now 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.

Junior Mike Assmann (Auburn) improved to 4-1 with the victory in the opener. He allowed four hits and two runs, none earned, in six and a third innings. He struck out nine and walked four. Senior Brandon DeRosa (Fairport) pitched the final two and two-third innings. He picked off a runner, then gave up just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts the rest of the way.

Five Red Dragons had multiple-hit games as part of a 17-hit attack. Senior Khyle Dimino (Brighton) was 3-for-5 with an RBI and senior Andersen Gardner (Fairport) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and four RBI. Junior Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and four runs scored. Sophomore Matt June (Colonie) finished 2-for-4 with two walks and three runs and senior Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Rafael Cordero was 2-for-4 and Andrew Lazzaro reached twice on walks for Oswego. Brady Farkas suffered the loss for the Lakers after allowing five runs over five innings.

Cortland led 3-2 before scoring two in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to break the game open. Gardner hit two-run doubles in both the third and seventh innings. Nickel's RBI double and Dimino's RBI single highlighted the three-run sixth.

In the second game, Cortland jumped out with three runs in the top of the first in support of senior starter Adam Brown (Rochester/Greece Athena). Simone and Gardner singled in runs in the inning. A run on a wild pitch in the fourth gave Cortland a 4-0 lead, with Oswego getting that run back on a bases-loaded walk by Dan Slate in the bottom of the inning.

June's RBI single in the top of the sixth was offset by Rafael Cordero's RBI single for Oswego in the bottom of the sixth. Cortland completed the scoring in the eighth on a June RBI double and Nickel RBI groundout.

June finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and Simone was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Damon Arnold (Wellsville) finished 2-for-3 with a walk and senior Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) went 2-for-5.

Brown is now 3-1 with the victory. He permitted six hits and four walks but only two runs in five and a third innings. He struck out seven batters. After Oswego closed to within 4-1 in the fourth, the Lakers had the bases loaded with no outs. Brown, however, got out of the jam with two strikeouts sandwiched around a flyout.

Lazzaro was 3-for-5 with a double and Cordero and Kane Share each had two hits for Oswego. Andy Salvatore gave up 13 hits and seven runs, five earned, in seven innings to suffer the loss.

Cortland will host Keuka College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a single game. The game was originally scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
