Khyle Dimino (Brighton) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored what proved to be the winning run on a passed ball in the sixth inning as Cortland edged St. Joseph's College of Long Island, 3-2, in a non-league game.
The Red Dragons, ranked 13th nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association and 22nd by D3baseball.com, improve to 13-5 with its fifth straight win. The Golden Eagles drop to 8-11 with the loss.
Junior
Michael Mahay (Whitesboro) earned the victory after allowing six hits and two runs in six innings. He struck out three and walked two. Sophomore
Brendan Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) pitched one and two-third scoreless innings and senior
Ed Southworth (Cortland) earned his third save by retiring all four batters he faced, two by strikeout.
Sophomore Jason Dierkes (Mt. Sinai) took the loss. He gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned, in seven and a third innings. He fanned four batters and walked four. Sophomore Seth Pileggi (Nesconset/Smithtown Christian) finished 3-for-4 and sophomore James Carey (Patchogue/St. John the Baptist) was 1-for-2 with two walks for the Golden Eagles.
With the game tied at 2-2, Dimino reached on a two-out bunt single. On a steal attempt of second, he appeared to be picked off, but beat the first baseman's throw to second. Dimino then took third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball that escaped the catcher by about 15 feet.
Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore
Matt June (Colonie)led off with a double, advanced to third on a single by senior
Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) and scored on a
Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) groundout. Nickel finished 2-for-3 with a walk in four plate appearances.
The Red Dragons' lead grew to 2-0 in the third. Senior
Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) walked with two outs and stole second when he beat a pickoff relay throw from first. After another walk,
Khyle Dimino singled to right center to drive home his brother.
St. Joseph's tied the game with two in the fourth. Pileggi and Prateek Thaman (Hauppauge) led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third on a Chris Wright (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) sacrifice bunt. A Frank DiPresso (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) groundout scored one run and the other scored on a Carey RBI single.
The Golden Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the fifth. With Mark Cisek (Sayville) on second and Mike Gerdes (Wantagh/MacArthur) on first and one out, Pileggi singled to right. Cisek held at third, but the throw from the outfield sailed over the catcher's head. Cisek then tried to score but was thrown out at the plate.
Cortland will host Cazenovia on Friday in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader. The teams were originally scheduled to play just one game, but instead will play two seven-inning games.
