Red Dragons Place Second at SUNYAC Championships; O'Brien Captures Third Straight Steeplechase Title

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior Kyle O'Brien (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won his third consecutive league title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Cortland claimed an additional three individual and one relay crown at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The College at Brockport hosted the two-day meet.

The Red Dragons finished second out of eight schools in the final team standings. Geneseo won the league title with 213 points, followed by Cortland (148.5), Brockport (143.5), Buffalo St. (83), Fredonia (77), Plattsburgh (65), Oneonta (58) and Oswego (14).

O'Brien posted a winning time of 9:34.01 in the steeplechase. Senior Joe Keleher (Newfane) won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.55 seconds after placing second in the event each of the last two years. Senior Schuyler Field (Queensbury) won the pole vault after clearing 4.40 meters (14' 5.25”). Keleher tied for second in the pole vaut at 4.25 meters (13' 11.25”).

Freshman Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won the javelin throw with a distance of 49.85 meters (163' 6.5”), while his brother, junior Nick Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy), placed second at 48.55 meters (159' 3.5”). Senior Durrell Reed (Syracuse/Corcoran) and Nick Wilson finished second and third, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles. Reed finished in 15.64 seconds and Wilson was clocked at 15.99 seconds.

The combination of freshman Eric Banks (Westbury), sophomore Zac Farnham-Haskell (Essex Junction, VT/Essex), junior Phill Wiltshire (Vestal) and junior Gino Bisceglia (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:20.87. Bisceglia also finished second in the 400-meter run in 48.83 seconds, less than seven tenths of a second behind the winner.

In the triple jump, freshman Dash Ellis (Tomkins Cove/North Rockland) finished second with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.22 meters (46' 7.75”) and freshman P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) placed third at 14.09 meters (46' 2.75”).

In addition to Field and Keleher, Cortland earned two other scoring spots in the pole vault as sophomore Ken Bucaro (Tully) and freshman Rob Brower (Massapequa) each cleared 4.10 meters (13' 5.5”). Bucaro was officially sixth and Brower placed seventh.

Senior Darnell Owens (Fallsburgh) finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.43), with freshman classmate Zac Karpinski (Syracuse/West Genesee) in fifth place (11.47). Freshman Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was fourth in the shot put with a distance of 14.40 meters (47' 3”) and sixth in the discus at 38.35 meters (125' 9.75”). Shawn Wilson placed seventh in the discus at 36.76 meters (120' 7”).

Sophomore Kyle Fitzpatrick (Washingtonville) finished fifth in the 800 meters (2:01.23), senior Justin Wager (Guilderland) placed fifth in the 5,000 meters (15:28.30) and Wiltshire was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.60).

Freshman Bryan Rossi (Kings Park) scored 4,650 points for a fifth-place finish in the decathlon. The 4x100-meter relay squad of Owens, Karpinski, sophomore Dan McManus (Warwick/Warwick Valley) and freshman Dan Fugazot (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) finished fifth (43.72). Karpinski was also eighth in the 200-meter dash (23.29).

In the long jump, freshman Josh Daves (Huntington) and Ellis each recorded a distance of 6.23 meters (20' 5.25”). Due to a tiebreaker system, Daves finished seventh and Ellis was eighth.

ALL-CONFERENCE NOTE:  Individual first-place finishers at the conference meet earn first team All-SUNYAC honors, while second-place individual finishers earn second team All-SUNYAC honors. Therefore, Shawn Wilson, Schuyler Field, Kyle O'Brien and Joe Keleher are first team all-conference, while Dash Ellis, Nick Wilson, Gino Bisceglia and Durrell Reed are second team all-conference.
