CLINTON, N.Y. – The Cortland men's cross country team opened its 2010 season with a second-place finish at the five-team Hamilton College Short Course Invitational. The Red Dragons finished with 42 points, only seven behind team champion Hamilton. Mansfield placed third with 59 points, followed by Nazareth (106) and Mohawk Valley Community College (137).
All of Cortland's top seven runners finished among the top 14 in the 70-runner field. Junior
Brendan Ward (St. James/Smithtown East) was fifth with a time of 19:44.8 over the 6,000-meter layout at the Hamilton College Golf Course. Sophomore
Pat Fannon (West Islip) placed sixth in 19:54.5 and freshman
Ryan Perry (Amherst/Williamsville North) finished eighth in 20:06.5.
Senior
Brendan Brethel (Lynbrook) led a group of eight Cortland runners who finished in the 11th through 18th spots. Brethel was timed in 20:14.1 for 11th place, followed by freshman
Tim Lee (West Babylon) in 12th (20:16.3), sophomore
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) in 13th (20:17.8) and junior
Jon Tuttle (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) in 14th (20:18.7).
Rounding out that group were freshman
Casey Austin (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) in 15th place (20:21.8), freshman
Kyle Martin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) in 16th (20:24.9), senior
Andrew Brusso (Elmira/Southside) in 17th (20:28.7) and sophomore
Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in 18th (20:32.7).
