CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team finished in third place at its own 12-team Red Dragon Classic with a 3-1 record. The Red Dragons, now 5-1 overall, lost to Fredonia in four sets in the semifinals of the championship pool, then beat Rochester in three sets in the third-place match. Lebanon Valley College repeated as tournament champion with a 3-0 win over Fredonia in the finals.
Fredonia defeated Cortland by set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20. Junior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley), an all-tournament team selection, led Cortland with 13 kills and 12 digs. Junior
Sheena Asibey (Brentwood) and sophomore
Katie Wick (Cortland/Homer) finished with eight kills each, with Wick also recording 10 digs.
Sophomore
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) had 31 assists. Junior
Kaitlyn Cooper (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and sophomore
Jenna Davies (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) contributed four kills and four blocks apiece.
In the Red Dragons' 25-20, 25-15, 25-23 win over Rochester, Coyle registered 11 kills and six digs and Wick added nine kills and seven digs. Asibey put down six kills and had a team-high four blocks, and Cooper totaled five kills and three blocks. Guercio dished out 31 assists and sophomore
Erin Carrino (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led the squad with 15 digs.
Cortland will play at the Montclair St. Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11. The Red Dragons will play St. Mary's (Md.) and Lycoming (Pa.) on Friday and Penn St. Altoona and Montclair St. on Saturday in the predetermined tournament schedule.
