Cortland Finishes Second at RPI Kumpf Invitational; Distler Wins 200-Yard Freestyle

TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Matt Distler (Glens Falls) won the 200-yard freestyle and led off a winning relay effort as Cortland finished second out of eight teams at the RPI Kumpf Invitational. Ithaca won the meet with 608 points, followed by the Red Dragons with 551. RPI was third with 434, with Roger Williams (204.5), Clarkson (167), Oneonta (163.5), Vassar (114) and Skidmore (69) rounding out the field.

The competition was also scored as dual meets between each of the schools. Cortland finished 6-1, with its only loss coming versus Ithaca.

Distler won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.28 and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.44 seconds, five hundredth of a second behind the winner. He teamed with sophomore Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), sophomore Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) and freshman Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:14.95.

Sophomore Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) was second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.48) and finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.10), while freshman Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) placed second in the 1,000-yard freesytle (10:27.31).

Freshman Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) turned in three top-five finishes. He was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.83), fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:31.26) and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.16). Junior Judd Simon (Oneida) finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.18) and was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.97).

Maximowicz turned in a third-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle (49.04) and a fourth-place time in the 50-yard freestyle (22.09). Sophomore Kyle Kaznowski (Kingston) was third in one-meter diving (247.45 points) and junior Travis Burke (Massapequa) finished fourth in three-meter diving (259.35 points).

Strickland had the fourth-best time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.84) and junior Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.74). Strothenke finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.52) and junior Danny Salvatore (Clarence) placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.01).

In addition to Cortland's winning 400-yard freestyle relay team, three other Red Dragon relay units earned top-five finishes. Junior Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor), Salvatore, McManus and Strothenke were third in the 400-yard medley relay (3:42.29), with Simon, sophomore Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), Scheemaker and freshman Gregory MacDonald (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) fifth in that event (3:45.46). Scheemaker, senior Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), MacDonald and freshman Matt Latorre (Bethlehem) finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.97).
