NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Cortland demonstrated good depth as the Red Dragons edged New Paltz, 135-127, in a road dual meet. The Red Dragons posted the victory despite winning only five of the meet's 14 events.

Cortland's winners included junior Judd Simon (Oneida) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.69), junior Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor) in the 100-yard backstroke (56.27) and sophomore Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.99). Sophomore Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.18) and freshman Matt Distler (Glens Falls) took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.87).

Simon also earned two of Cortland's 13 second-place finishes. He was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (50.22) and 200-yard individual medley (2:04.37). Freshman Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10.23.08) and 100-yard butterfly (56.34), while senior Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.58) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.24).

Drew finished second behind Nelson in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.64) and freshman Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) was second behind Distler in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.87). Junior Danny Salvatore (Clarence) touched the wall second behind MacQuarrie in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.05) and sophomore Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) finished behind the winner Drew in the 100-yard backstroke (57.86).

Sophomore Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.34). Drew, Strickland, junior Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and freshman Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.20) and Distler, Maximowicz, freshman Gregory MacDonald (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) and Strothenke were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.57).
