ONEONTA, N.Y. – Oneonta scored the game's final seven points after Cortland rallied from a 21-point deficit and the host Red Dragons posted a 67-61 victory in a SUNYAC matchup.
Troy Talbot led Oneonta (6-10, 5-4 SUNYAC) with 17 points and seven assists. Derek Hahn recorded a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds and Shane Gillette finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore
Jesse Winter (Rockville Center/South Side) paced Cortland (5-11, 2-7 SUNYAC) with a career-high 23 points and also handed out five assists. He made 4-of-6 three-pointers. Sophomore
Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) and sophomore
Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, and sophomore
Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville) grabbed seven rebounds.
Cortland trailed 43-24 at halftime and 45-24 early in the second half. The Red Dragons, however, responded by scoring the next 18 points, including nine by Winter and eight by Hefele, and trailed by only three with 12:21 left.
Oneonta went up 60-53 on a Hahn three-point play with less than four minutes left, but Cortland answered with three-pointers by freshman
John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) and Winter and a layup by Smith to take a 61-60 lead with 1:46 remaining.
Oneonta, however, regained the lead on a Hahn layup with 1:30 left. Cortland missed a shot on its next possession and Hahn hit two free throws with 53 seconds left to push the lead to three. Cortland turned the ball over on its next trip down the court and Brian Hooks sank two foul shots with 35 seconds remaining to help seal the win.
Cortland has twice rallied from second-half deficits of more than 20 points to take the lead on the road this season, but the Red Dragons have lost both games. Cortland trailed by 27 points at Fredonia in early December before losing in double overtime.
Cortland will host Fredonia on Friday at 8 p.m. and Buffalo State Saturday at 4 p.m. in league action.
