CORTLAND, N.Y. –Senior Glenroy Carr (New York/Sweet Home) hit the go-ahead layup with 33 seconds remaining and Buffalo State held on to defeat Cortland, 70-68, in a SUNYAC contest. The Bengals are now 6-5 in the league and 11-6 overall. The Red Dragons drop to 3-8 in the SUNYAC and 6-12 overall.

The game was tied 15 times, the last with 2:04 remaining after a layup by Buffalo State's Chris Cartwright (Binghamton). Cartwright was fouled on the play, and his free throw put the Bengals ahead 67-66. Both teams came up empty on their next two possessions, and Cortland regained the lead at 68-67 on a Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) running jumper with just over 50 seconds left.

Cartwright set up Carr for what proved to be the winning basket with 33 seconds remaining. Cortland missed a three-pointer on its next possession and Carr made the first of two free throws with 16 seconds left to give the Bengals a two-point lead.

Cortland raced downfield after the missed free throw, but was unable to get a good look and called timeout with 3.1 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Buffalo State's Ahmed Nagaya (Bronx/Astor Collegiate Academy) was able to deflect the ball away from Cortland's Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side). Winter recovered the ball near midcourt, but was only able to launch a 30-foot three-pointer that glanced off the left side of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) led Buffalo State with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He hit 4-of-6 three-pointers and pulled down seven rebounds. Cartwright finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists and Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) scored 13 points and hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds, seven offensive.

Smith led four Cortland double-figure scorers with 25 points. He made 11 of his17 shots from the floor. Sophomore Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) finished with 15 points and six rebounds, freshman John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) scored 12 points and blocked a career-high five shots, and Winter added 10 points and five assists. Sophomore Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville) recorded a team-best eight rebounds and also registered three blocks and three steals.

Buffalo State held the game's largest lead at 48-39 with 12:47 left, but Cortland used a 13-2 run to take a 52-50 lead less than three minutes later. The Red Dragons went up 58-52 on a Smith three-pointer with 8:08 remaining, but the Bengals scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the game with 6:16 left. Neither team led by more than two after that.
